PE

We recognise the importance of providing children with a broad and balanced curriculum in order to prepare them for life in the 21st century. Sport and physical education is an integral part of the curriculum we provide because as a school, we understand how active, healthy bodies can promote active, healthy minds. This improves children’s ability to focus and engage in their daily learning as well as becoming active citizens for life. We do so by ensuring all individuals have equal opportunities across all aspects of physical education and intend that all children;

  • Develop fundamental movement skills across a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for 30 minutes per day
  • Understand the importance of being physically active
  • Engage in a range of regular competitive sporting activities

Children receive two hours of curriculum PE per week, one indoor session delivered by a specialist sports coach and an outdoor session delivered by the class teacher.

In the EYFS children develop basic movement skills such as spatial awareness, coordination and balance.

As they progress into KS1 they begin to apply these fundamental movement skills through mini competitive games and activities.

In KS2 children take more ownership over their PE sessions, taking on roles as leaders, working as part of a team and participating in a range of competitive sporting activities to establish their understanding of sportsmanship.

Impact

PE helps children to:

  • Build self-esteem through providing equal opportunities for all
  • Work collaboratively allowing them to gain a sense of belonging and an appreciation of what it means to be a member of a team
  • Appreciate the value of sportsmanship by developing resilience
  • Express themselves creatively through a variety of activities
  • Develop leadership both within PE lessons and through supporting participation across the school
  • Feel the physical, mental and social benefits of being active
  • Understand the role sport can have in connecting people across the world through the universal language of sport
  • Understand potential career opportunities by regularly meeting athletes to raise their personal aspirations
