A warm welcome to you and thank you for visiting our class page….I am Mr Bickle – the proud teacher of the Parkwall year 6 team! Take a look at our page for a flavour of our learning…
Hello 2020! It has been a cold start to term 3 but the class have continued to grow as learners and children. They have absolutely loved their new class book “One Thousand and One Arabian Nights” which has seen a focus on Early Islamic Civilisation. A strong emphasis on geography and art skills have seen the class produce some fantastic maps, paintings and stitching!
The community links have continued this term and below you can see the class engaging wonderfully with the elderly citizens of Cadbury Heath. This was the class making Chinese lanterns and dragons at the ‘Guys and Dolls’ session.
Typically one of the most exciting terms of the year, term two in year 6 has not disappointed. We have been busy exploring our topic of “How do you light up your world?” as well as loving the numerous extra workshops put in place through our fantastic links with the community. First of all, we were lucky enough to have St John’s Ambulance in to deliver first response training with all of the year sixes. What a fantastic lesson in learning lifesaving skills – the children loved it! Secondly, we have travelled to Clifton Cathedral to perform in the joint choir with many other schools across the county. This most impressive of buildings saw our class love their afternoon singing there.
Christmas arrived in year 6 and were in full swing of parties, eating and learning about the Christian meaning behind many decorations associated with Christmas.
However, there was enough time, as there always should be, to think about the less fortunate at this time of the year and link back to our learning from term 1 about homelessness. Rather than spending money on a Christmas present for Mr Bickle, the class decided to bring in a contribution of up to £3 which they then counted up and wrote a shopping list to create a care package for a homeless shelter. The discussions around the necessities at Xmas time were invaluable and worth more than any gift! We raised £48 and built a package which we dropped off at Juice Community Centre in Cadbury Heath.
An amazing thing to do year 6!
The class have settled in extremely well, leading by example in many areas of school life: corridor monitors, playground leaders and hall helpers. In the classroom, we have looked at the topic “What is Home?” and have discussed many important and current issues such as immigration and homelessness. See the picture of our learning wall.
Not only have we discussed this issue, we were fortunate to visit London on a school trip this term where we saw homelessness first hand. The children also took in the sights of our capital city. Here is a pic of us on the River Thames cruise (still a few sleepy faces from the long coach trip!):
As well as this opportunity, a number of our year sixes have had weekly opportunities to represent our wonderful school at sports matches and events. They have done this impeccably, showing fantastic sportsmanship and skill. Here is a picture of many of the year sixes at the Sportshall Athletics Competition where they were role models for the younger members in the team:
