Curriculum intent

In Art we aim to engage, inspire, and challenge pupils to explore and experiment in creating their own works of Art. Through Art the children are able to express themselves and show links to other curriculum areas. Children develop an understanding and practical skills to use tools and media effectively and develop techniques and processes to produce a finished product.

What does learning look like at our school?

All children have their own sketchbook. Year groups 1 to 6 look at a different artist each term and explore the techniques of drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, textiles, digital media, and illustration. The children follow a pattern of sessions that focus on introducing the artist, experimenting with their style and media, and producing their own Artwork. Techniques and skills are built on year by year with the aim of all pupils having produced creative work exploring and recording experiences.

How can families support at home?

Children are able bring in any artwork created out of school to share with their class.

    Explore famous artists and artworks through games, quizzes, videos and creative activities. A fun and accessible website for primary-aged children.
  2. National Gallery – Family Activities
    Discover famous paintings and artists and try creative activities inspired by the National Gallery’s collection.
  3. Artful Parent
    Find lots of simple, creative art activities that children can enjoy at home using everyday materials.
  4. Google Arts & Culture
    Explore artwork, museums and galleries from around the world, including virtual tours and interactive experiences.
  5. BBC Bitesize – Art and Design
    Explore art and design through videos, activities and information designed to support children’s learning.
  6. AccessArt
    A UK-based collection of art resources covering drawing, painting, sculpture, sketchbooks, artists and creative techniques. AccessArt has more than 1,500 resources, with many free resources available.
  7. The Metropolitan Museum of Art – MetKids
    Explore art from around the world through games, videos, activities and an interactive map of the museum.
  8. National Portrait Gallery – Families
    Explore portraits and take part in family-friendly activities, trails and creative events.
  9. Art UK – Learning Resources
    Discover British art and artists through activities, videos and learning resources, including resources specifically designed for primary schools.
  10. Crayola – Creative Ideas
    Find drawing, colouring and craft ideas that children can try at home, with activities suitable for a range of ages.
