Curriculum intent

At The Park and Parkwall Federation, our goal is to help every child build a lifelong love of music while boosting their confidence on stage. Our pupils enjoy making music through our regular singing assemblies, our school choirs, and fun, interactive music lessons in class using our chosen program, Charanga.
Our Music curriculum is based on the National Curriculum. We want to make sure all pupils:
- Perform, listen to, and talk about music from different times, places, and styles, including the works of famous composers.
- Learn to sing and use their voices to create their own music, both alone and with friends.
- Get the chance to learn a musical instrument, use music technology, and take their skills to the next level.
- Understand how music is made. This includes learning about pitch (high and low), tempo (fast and slow), volume, and how to read music.
What does learning look like at our school?
You will go on a clear, step-by-step musical journey with us using Charanga as you move up through the school:
- Year 1: Students start by mastering drums and rhythm.
- Year 2: Students learn to play the pBuzz (a fun beginner brass instrument).
- Year 3: Students learn to play string instruments like the ukulele.
- Year 4: Students play loud and exciting brass instruments like the cornet. (a smaller trumpet)
Years 5 & 6: Older students get to pick their favourite instrument family, and even help teach the younger children along with experiment with music technology.

How can families support at home?
One of the most important things you can do at home is simply listen to a wide variety of music together. This helps children hear new styles and discover different instruments from all around the world.
Taking them to see live music performances whenever you can is another amazing way to bring music to life and expand their world!
