Pupil Leadership

Our School Council gives pupils an important opportunity to have their voices heard and to play an active role in school life. Each year, pupils who would like to represent their class can apply to become a School Councillor. Candidates prepare a short manifesto and present a speech to their classmates, explaining why they would like the role and how they hope to make a positive contribution to our school.

Following the speeches, pupils take part in a democratic election. Ballot papers and ballot boxes are used so that children can experience the voting process first-hand and understand the importance of democracy, representation and making informed choices. Votes are then counted and the successful candidates are announced in a special celebration assembly.

Our newly elected School Councillors receive their badges, sign the School Council pledge and begin their role representing the views and ideas of their classmates. Throughout the year, they help to make a real difference to our school community and ensure that pupil voice is at the heart of school life.

An example of this, would be our Key Stage 1 climbing frame which was installed in June. Our School council met the designer, measured, mapped the playground and then chose a design within a budget. This was then presented to their classes for feedback before meeting the Headteacher to give the go ahead.
