Curriculum intent
We believe that the ability to communicate ideas clearly and accurately through writing is an essential life skill. Through our writing curriculum, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of writing by giving pupils the knowledge, skills and confidence to write with enjoyment and purpose. Strong writing skills support success across the curriculum and beyond.
Writing is a key part of both our English curriculum and the wider curriculum. The close link between reading and writing is reflected in our use of high-quality texts from a diverse range of authors. Our curriculum provides pupils with opportunities to write for different purposes and audiences across a variety of genres.
We aim to develop pupils’ vocabulary and language choices so they can write creatively and effectively. Through engaging writing experiences, pupils learn to create imaginative settings, vivid descriptions and interesting narratives while expressing their ideas with increasing confidence and accuracy.
What does learning look like at our school?
Writing across the school is based on a new, high-quality text each term. The children use a ‘try it – use it – prove it’ structure to learn and apply key skills within their independent writing.
Learning is adapted through various provisions such as Widgit, word banks and sentence stems to support children to access the curriculum.
Teachers continuously assess writing throughout the year and use this assessment to inform further planning and learning.

How can families support at home?
Families can support their children at home by practicing the following handwriting joins and spellings, as well as encouraging their child to write for pleasure.
